Pentax Lenses: Digital Photography Review

Obviously, with lenses this old, your results may vary depending on how well they have been kept and what their condition is (as well as the quality of the adapter you choose, many overlooks this and blame a lens when in many cases it is an adapter that doesn’t hold the lens quite right). But assuming you get good quality and pair with a good adapter, I can whole heartedly recommend these Pentax manual focus lenses.

Compatibility
This lens is Pentax KA fitting, suitable for all manual focus bayonet Pentax cameras including the KM, KX, K2, K1000, ME, MX, ME Super, ME-F, MG, MV, MV-1, LX, Super A (Super Program), Program A (Program Plus), P30 (P3) series, P50 (P5), A3000 (A3), MZ-M (ZX-M) and others. The mechanical and electronic connections are included for auto diaphragm, full aperture metering and all exposure modes including program and shutter priority where available.

Also fits numerous Chinons (with program modes on all suitable models, including the CP-9AF), Ricohs (no program or shutter bias modes - see below), Cosinas, Vivitars and a huge variety of other cameras using the popular PK lens mount.

Also fits most Pentax AF and digital SLR cameras, including the SFX (SF1), SFXn (SF1n), SF7, Z-1 (PZ-1), Z-1P (PZ-1P), Z-10 (PZ-10), Z-20 (PZ-20), Z-70 (PZ-70), MZ-3, MZ-5 (ZX-5), MZ-5n (ZX-5n), MZ-6 (ZX-L), MZ-7 (ZX-7), MZ-10 (ZX-10), MZ-30 (ZX-30), MZ-50 (ZX-50), MZ-S, *ist plus Pentax *ist D, DS, DS2, DL, DL2, K100D, K100D Super, K110D, K200D, K10D, K20D, K-30, K-m (K2000), K-x, K-r, K-7, K-5 digital SLR cameras plus the K-01 - the focal length range will be increased by 50 per cent (see above). Equally suitable for the Pentax-based Samsung GX-1S, GX-1L, GX-10 and GX-20 cameras (but not other Samsung models). Auto diaphragm and full aperture metering, compatible with all exposure and metering modes, and manual focusing with electronic focus confirmation.

The exception is the Pentax MZ-60 (ZX-60) which will NOT work at all with manual focus lenses and accessories.

With a suitable adapter (not included) PKA/R lenses can be used on Olympus, Panasonic and Leica FourThirds (4/3), Micro Four Thirds, Pentax Q, Ricoh GXR Mount A12, Samsung NX and Sony NEX digital cameras, with manual focus and diaphragm, in manual and aperture priority auto exposure modes, using stopped down metering.

NOTE: Some independent manual lenses don't fit AF cameras or the MZ-M, as protrusions at the rear foul features on the mount. This lens was originally PKA/R (Ricoh) fitting, and the Ricoh pin prevented it mounting on AF and digital cameras. This pin has been removed and the lens checked on our Pentax digital camera, and it now fits and works fine. We can reinstall this pin if you require program modes on suitable Ricoh cameras (please contact us before buying), but then it will not fit Pentax AF or digital SLRs.

With a suitable adapter (not included) KA lenses can be used on Pentax Q, Olympus, Panasonic or Leica FourThirds (4/3) and Micro Four Thirds, Leica M, Ricoh GXR Mount A12, Samsung NX and Sony NEX digital compact system cameras, with manual focus and diaphragm, in manual and aperture priority auto exposure modes, using stopped down metering. Adapters are available (not included) to fit PK lenses to the Nikon 1 series (J1, J2, V1 and V2) cameras, with fully manual operation (no metering).

NOTE: Some independent manual lenses don't fit AF cameras or the MZ-M, as protrusions at the rear foul the power zoom contacts or other features inside the mount. We've checked this lens on our Pentax digital camera, and it fits and works fine.

Thanks a lot for writing this up. I just switched to Pentax, and now have a K-30. I guess my major question regards whether aperture info will be communicated to the camera, and subsequently to the EXIF file, with each of the major Pentax manual focus lens lineages (K, M, and A). Also, for A-series lenses, is aperture communicated to the EXIF file if using the aperture ring? Using these older lenses was part of what attracted me to Pentax in the first place, and not having a complete EXIF file will bug me.
